Et (3-cyano-5-ethoxycarbonyl-6-methyl-4-styryl-2-pyridylsulfanyl)acetate was prepared and reacted with hydrazine hydrate in ethanol to give a mixture of (3-cyano-5-ethoxycarbonyl-6-methyl-4-styryl-2- pyridylsulfanyl)acetohydrazide and di-Et 3-amino-6-methyl-4-styrylthieno[2,3-b]pyridine-2,5-dicarboxylate. The latter compound was reacted with 2,5-dimethoxytetrahydrofuran to give 3-(1H-pyrrol-1-yl)thieno[2,3-b]pyridine analog which on treatment with hydrazine hydrate in ethanol furnished 5-ethoxycarbonyl-6- methyl-3-(1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-4-styrylthieno[2,3-b]pyridine-2-carbohydrazide.
