Achieving high selectivity is one of the major challenges in heterogeneous catalysis, being carbon materials universally employed as catalysts support due to their so-called ?inert? nature. However, due to the complexity of its intrinsic characteristics, there are still several factors to bear in mind when selecting the appropriate carbon support. In this work we demonstrate that the remaining sulfur impurities in one type of commercial carbon nanofibers (CNFs) drastically alter the catalytic properties of palladium by triggering electro-deficient active sites. Two as-received CNFs thermally processed at different severity degrees, namely PS and HHT, were used to support Pd nanoparticles through the wet impregnation technique using palladium nitrate as precursor. The proof of principle is demonstrated through two transformation reactions of biomass platform molecules: the hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, performed in a batch-type reactor, and the ethanol dehydrogenation/decarbonylation reaction, carried out in a continuous flow fixed-bed reactor. In both reactions, Pd/PS was substantially more selective than its sulfur-free counterpart Pd/HHT, and one of the most selective in comparison with the state-of-the-art Pd catalysts. This finding makes available a simple, easy and green strategy to design carbon-supported Pd catalysts for selective hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions.

In a continuing study of bevirimat (2), the anti-HIV-maturation clinical trials agent, 28 new betulinic acid (BA, 1) derivatives were designed and synthesized. Among these compounds, 17, with a C-28 MEM ester moiety, and 22, with a C-28 ethyl hexanoate, increased the anti-HIV replication activity compared with 2 by 2-fold while compounds 40, 41, 48, and 49, with C-28 piperazine or piperidine amide substitutions, increased the activity by 3- to 15-fold. The best new compound, 41, exhibited an anti-HIV IC50 of 0.0059 muM compared with 0.087 muM for 2. All of the active compounds showed only antimaturation effects, as confirmed by TZM-bl assay, in blocking the HIV replication. The results suggest that proper C-28 substitutions can further enhance the antimaturation activity of 2 without any antientry effects. Thus, 41 may serve as a promising new lead for development of anti-AIDS clinical trial candidates.

In most cases, the rate of the Br+ transfer is subject to strong retardation in the presence of added parent olefin (Ad=Ad), suggestive of a common species rate depression. In some cases, such as 4-penten-1-ol (2b) and 4-pentenoic acid (4b), the reaction can be completely suppressed at high [Ad=Ad]. In other cases, such as 3-buten-1-ol (2a), 5-hexen-1-ol (2c), cyclohexene, 4-(hydroxymethyl)cyclohexene (3), and 5-endo-carboxynorbornene (5), added Ad=Ad does not suppress the reaction completely. In the cases of the 1,omega-alkenols, the reactions appear to exhibit kinetic terms that are greater than first order in alkenol. In these cases, alcohols such as 1-pentanol also accelerate the reaction, pointing to the involvement of the hydroxyl group of the second alkenol as a catalytic species. A unifying mechanism consistent with the data that involves two reversibly formed intermediates is presented.

In the last years, the honeybee population is facing growing threats such as expansion of pathogens, incorrect use of phytosanitary products and environmental contaminants, loss or fragmentation of habitat, invasive species and climate change. The citrus cropping by Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in Spain combines strategies to reduce pest populations preventing environmental problems and reducing levels of damage by using chemicals only when it is strictly necessary. The goal of this study is to develop a simple analytical method to evaluate pesticide residue levels in honeybees and corbicular pollen when honeybees are exposed to plant protection products (PPPs) used in integrated pest management citrus orchards. The proposed method is based in an ultrasound assisted extraction procedure followed by a dispersive solid phase extraction (d-SPE) clean-up with alumina and LC-MS/MS pesticides determination. The method was validated in samples of honeybee and corbicular pollen for 10 pesticides commonly used in citrus orchards under IPM. This procedure was compared with QuEChERS methodologies for these matrices. The developed method was applied to determine pesticides in both matrices in a two -year study in citrus orchards.
