We report here the initial examination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emanating from human earwax (cerumen). Recent studies link a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) binding cassette, sub-family C, member 11 gene (ABCC11) to the production of different types of axillary odorants and cerumen. ABCC11 encodes an ATP-driven efflux pump protein that plays an important function in ceruminous apocrine glands of the auditory canal and the secretion of axillary odor precursors. The type of cerumen and underarm odor produced by East Asians differ markedly from that produced by non-Asians. In this initial report we find that both groups emit many of the same VOCs but differ significantly in the amounts produced. The principal odorants are volatile organic C2-to-C6 acids. The physical appearance of cerumen from the two groups also matches previously reported ethnic differences, viz., cerumen from East Asians appears dry and white while that from non-Asians is typically wet and yellowish-brown.

2,5-Dimethylfuran (DMF) is an important candidate for liquid fuels and can be produced from biomass derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Efficient transformation of HMF to DMF has not been achieved over a non-noble catalyst under milder conditions. Herein, we developed a copper and cobalt bimetallic nanoparticle catalyst supported on N-graphene-modified Al2O3 (CuCo/NGr/alpha-Al2O3). It was found that CuCo/NGr/alpha-Al2O3 could catalyze the conversion of HMF to DMF effectively and the yield of DMF could reach 99%. The catalyst was completely not active for the hydrogenation of the C=C bond in furan and thus no 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (DHTHF) and 2,5-dimethyltetrahydrofuran (DMTHF) were detected.

A novel class of geldanamycin (GA) derivatives as hepatitis C virus (HCV) replication inhibitors has been synthesized and their anti-HCV activities were evaluated in GS4.3 HCV replicon cells. Most of the synthesized compounds demonstrated potential activities against HCV in vitro. Substitution with an aliphatic cyclic group (2b) and polar phosphate group (2f) at the 17 position of GA resulted in more potent inhibitory activity. The configurations of the tetrahydrofurfurylamino (THFM) substituents obviously affected their antiviral activities. The 2b with a 2?-(R)-THFM group at the 17 position showed much potent activity and higher selectivity than its 2?-(S) and 2?-(R, S) epimers. In the tested GA derivatives, 2b and 2f show the most potential leading compounds for development of novel anti-HCV agents.

A series of novel 1-(benzamide)-N-cyclopropyl-2-(amino substituted)-6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyrimidine-5-carboxamide derivatives is synthesised and characterized by IR, 1H and 13C NMR, and mass spectra. The synthesized compounds 6a-6j and 8a-8j are screened for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against two Grampositive (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis) and two Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Klebesiella aerogenes), and two pathogenic fungi (Aspergillus flavus, Fusarium oxysporum). Most of the compounds demonstrate good to excellent antimicrobial activity in comparison with the standard drugs ciproflaxin and hymexazole. Among the screened compounds morpholine substituted dihydropyrimidone carboxamide 8j is determined to be the most potent anti-bacterial agent.

Catalytic selective hydrogenation and rearrangement of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 3-hydroxymethyl-cyclopentone over a bimetallic nickel-copper catalyst in water

The selective hydrogenation and rearrangement of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) to 3-hydroxymethyl-cyclopentone (HCPN) were studied over a MOF-derived bimetallic nickel-copper catalyst in water. The combination of nickel and copper dramatically improved the efficiency in both the selective hydrogenation of the carbonyl group of 5-HMF and the hydrogenative ring-rearrangement of the C5 ring, affording 70.3% yield for HCPN and 99.8% yield for the rearrangement products. Moreover, it was indicated that water acted as a solvent, reactant, and proton donor by dissociation at an elevated temperature, which supplied slightly acidic conditions and promoted the rearrangement reaction.

We studied dissociative electron attachment to a series of compounds with one or two hydroxyl groups. For the monoalcohols we found, apart from the known fragmentations in the 6-12 eV range proceeding via Feshbach resonances, also new weaker processes at lower energies, around 3 eV. They have a steep onset at the dissociation threshold and show a dramatic D/H isotope effect. We assigned them as proceeding via shape resonances with temporary occupation of sigma*O-H orbitals. These low energy fragmentations become much stronger in the larger molecules and the strongest DEA process in the compounds with two hydroxyl groups, which thus represent an intermediate case between the behavior of small alcohols and the sugar ribose which was discovered to have strong DEA fragmentations near zero electron energy [S. Ptasinska, S. Denifl, P. Scheier and T. D. Maerk, J. Chem. Phys., 2004, 120, 8505]. Above 6 eV, in the Feshbach resonance regime, the dominant process is a fast loss of a hydrogen atom from the hydroxyl group. In some cases the resulting (M – 1)- anion (loss of hydrogen atom) is sufficiently energy-rich to further dissociate by loss of stable, closed shell molecules like H2 or ethene. The fast primary process is state- and site selective in several cases, the negative ion states with a hole in the n O orbital losing the OH hydrogen, those with a hole in the sigmaC-H orbitals the alkyl hydrogen. the Owner Societies.
