Electron-stimulated desorption of H- from condensed-phase deoxyribose analogues: Dissociative electron attachment versus resonance decay into Dipolar dissociation

We report the 5-40 eV electron-stimulated desorption (ESD) yields of H- from thin films of the DNA backbone sugarlike analogues tetrahydrofuran (I), 3-hydroxytetrahydrofuran (II), and alpha-tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (III), as well as ESD yields from submonolayer amounts of these compounds condensed on multilayer Ar films. For the pure disordered solid films, our results corroborate the previous observation of a peak in the H- yield function at an incident electron energy, Ei, of ?10 eV attributed to dissociative electron attachment (DEA) along the CH bonds via the formation of a core-excited resonance. For II and III, a second low-energy peak is also observed in the H- ESD yield function. This peak appears near an Ei of 7.3 eV as a weak shoulder superimposed on the low-energy side of the 10 eV structure; it is associated with a core-excited Feshbach resonance leading to H- production via DEA to the OH substituent. For each of the three molecules, we observe near 23 eV a third broad peak in the H- ESD yield functions. Measurements of the H- yields, as a function of the coverage of thin Ar spacer films by I, II, and III, suggest that the 23-eV peak is not due to multiple electron scattering, but results from direct transient anion formation above the dipolar dissociation threshold. These results, combined with those recorded at higher Ar spacer thickness, indicate that the 23-eV peak arises principally from decay of a transient anion (or anions) into an electronic excited state (or states), which dissociates into H- and the corresponding positive ion radical.

Hydrocarbons (32.9%), alcohols (17.8%) and carbonyl compounds (16.0%) predominated in the sponge volatile profile, followed by esters (11.6%), halogen compounds (8.6%), ethers (7.7%), nitrogen and/or sulfur compounds (4.6%) and carboxylic acids (0.8%). Among the identified volatiles, thiobismethane (commonly known as dimethylsulfide), methyl isocyanide and methyl isothiocyanate were found to be responsible for the nauseating and toxic smell emitted by the sponge and for the antimicrobial activity detected in the volatile extract. Exudation experiments in aquarium and in situ conditions revealed that thiobismethane, methyl isocyanide and methyl isothiocyanate are continuously released by the sponge. Upon injury, the concentration of these volatiles increased strongly. Hence, these substances form a chemical protective barrier which may help these sponges avoid fouling, compete for space, prevent infection in the short term, and/or signal generalist predators regarding the existence of other toxic substances in the internal tissues.

Remote Effects Modulating the Spin Equilibrium of the Resting State of Cytochrome P450cam – An Investigation Using Active Site Analogues

The crystal structure of the resting state of cytochrome P450 cam (CYP101), a heme thiolate protein, shows a cluster of six water molecules in the substrate binding pocket, one of which is coordinating to iron(III) as sixth ligand. The resting state is low-spin and changes to high-spin when substrate camphor binds and H2O is removed. In contrast to the protein, previously synthesised enzyme models such as H 2O-FeIII(porph)(ArS-) were shown to be purely high-spin. Iron(S-)porphyrins with different distal sites mimicking proposed remote effects have been prepared and studied by cw-EPR. The results indicate that the low-spin of the resting state of P450cam is due to the fact that the water molecule coordinating to iron has an OH –like character because of hydrogen bonding and polarisation of the water cluster, respectively.
