Optimization of FRET Behavior in Photoswitchable [2]Rotaxanes Containing Bifluorophoric Naphthalimide Donor and Merocyanine Acceptor with Sensor Approaches toward Sulfite Detection

A series of multistimuli-responsive [2]rotaxanes with a naphthalimide-functionalized macrocycle threaded through an axle containing a photochromic spiropyran (SP) or merocyanine (MC) stopper were fabricated and studied for their distinct photophysical properties in semiaqueous solutions. By different combinations of chemical and photochemical switchable stimuli, these [2]rotaxanes could be interconverted between multiple states, including monofluorophoric [2]rotaxanes with the close form of the SP unit, i.e., Rot-H-SP and Rot-SP before and after shuttling upon acid-base controls, respectively, along with their corresponding bifluorophoric [2]rotaxanes possessing the open form of the MC unit, i.e., Rot-H-MC and Rot-MC after UV exposure. Interestingly, the photoinduced electron-transfer (PET) effects appeared between nonemissive SP and aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) naphthalimide units in [2]rotaxanes Rot-H-SP and Rot-SP, whereas the Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET)/Dexter energy transfer occurred in [2]rotaxanes Rot-H-MC and Rot-MC between green-emissive naphthalimide donor (lambda(em) = 528 nm) and red-emissive MC acceptor (lambda(em) = 648 nm) moieties after UV exposure. Among all [2]rotaxanes and derivatives, Rot-MC in tetrahydrofuran (THF)/H2O (2:8, v/v) revealed the strongest red MC emission with the most effective FRET process that possessed attractive ratiometric photoluminescence (PL) due to the ideal shortest donor-acceptor distance. Regardless of pH and temperature effects, the highest red MC emissions with the optimum FRET processes of all compounds were maintained at room temperature in near-neutral conditions (i.e., pH = 5-9). Importantly, the red-emissive [2]rotaxane Rot-MC showed high selectivity and sensitivity toward sulfite-ion sensing to recover green donor emission via FRET-OFF behavior owing to the Michael reaction of the MC moiety with the sulfite ion, which had an excellent limit of detection (LOD) value of 0.76 mu M to be further utilized for the cellular imaging of sulfite detection in living cells. Accordingly, the novel ratiometric sensor approaches of bifluorophoric [2]rotaxane systems have been well developed in this study as the first rotaxane application of FRET processes toward sulfite detection with higher sensitivities than those of their monofluorophoric analogues. Various LOD values could be evaluated to realize the sulfite-sensing mechanisms of well-designed [2]rotaxane systems by the shuttling of macrocyclic fluorophores along with photoswitchable FRET behaviors via alternative UV-vis exposures.

Amphiphilic micelle-forming PDMS-PEGBEM comb copolymer self-assembly to tailor the interlamellar nanospaces of defective poly (ethylene oxide) membranes

An amphiphilic comb copolymer was synthesized via free-radical polymerization using two macromonomers: monomethacryloxypropyl-terminated poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS-MA, 10,000 g mol(-1)) and poly(ethylene glycol)-behenyl ether methacrylate (PEGBEM, 1500 g mol(-1)). The PDMS-PEGBEM comb copolymer underwent self-assembly to form micellar structures in ethanol/tetrahydrofuran solvent. The micelle-forming PDMS-PEGBEM copolymer was incorporated into the low-cost, commercially available polymer, and non-selective polymer poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO, 106 g mol-1), resulting in highly selective all-polymeric membranes. The alignment of the PDMS-PEGBEM micelles in the interlamellar region of PEO and the corresponding increase in the domain spacing were observed by transmission electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering, confirming the successful encapsulation of PDMS-PEGBEM in the interlamellar region. The PDMS functions as a rubbery filler between the crystallites, whereas PEGBEM has good affinity towards PEO because of their chemical similarity. The CO2/N-2 and CO2/CH4 selectivities of PEO membranes was significantly enhanced from 0.78 and 0.71 to 41.7 and 13.3, respectively, on the loading of 10 wt.% of the copolymer. The highest CO2 permeability reached 240 barrer at 50 wt.% copolymer loading, with the CO2/N-2 and CO2/CH4 selectivities of 34.6 and 12.2, respectively. Herein, the evolution of the interlamellar nanospaces and dual-phase region, as well as the microstructures of the membranes are reported.

Furthermore, the plated electrodes showed a remarkable morphology of the Na deposits, that is, no dendrite formation, whereby the above-mentioned electrolyte could overcome the aforementioned cycling issues, thus suggesting suitability for further studies.

Catalytic conversion of levulinic acid under noncorrosive conditions using Ru/Zr/Al-SBA-15 catalysts

Herein we report the synthesis of Ru/Zr/Al-SBA-15 catalysts, their characterization by XRD, FT-IR, BET, ICP, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, HAADF-STEM, XPS, TPR, TPD, TGA/DTA and UV-DRS techniques and their catalytic activity towards the hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) at ambient H-2 pressure under non-corrosive conditions. As the product 2-Methyl Tetrahydrofuran (2-MTHF) obtained in the hydrogenation of levulinic acid is a promising platform chemical having wide applications in the production of biofuels, fine chemicals and green solvents, this research work carries significance. The characterization studies revealed the presence of Zr species well dispersed on SBA-15 and upto 5% loading of Ru over Zr/Al-SBA-15 preserved the mesoporous structure of bare SBA-15. Among the different catalysts, 5% Ru/Zr/Al-SBA-15 (ISM) exhibited the highest catalytic activity with 97% conversion and 84% selectivity towards MTHF in the hydrogenation of levulinic acid without using any solvent. 5% Ru/Zr/Al-SBA-15 catalyst was also synthesized by other methods such as traditional impregnation method (TIM) and ultrasonication method (USM). 5% Ru/Zr/Al-SBA-15 (ISM) showed different morphologies depending on the preparative methods and their catalytic performances were found to be dependent on the method of synthesis. The recyclability of the best catalyst was tested upto five cycles and there was not much variation in terms of conversion and selectivity.

Thermal and optical properties of amphitropic liquid crystals derived from cholesterol and cinnamic acid

In this paper, we firstly demonstrate the synthesis of chiral amphitropic liquid crystals derived from cholesterol as well as their thermal and optical properties. Chiral monomeric cholesteryl-4-(6-acryloyloxyhexyloxy) cinnamate (CCM) derived from cholesterol and cinnamic acid has been synthesised showing amphitropic liquid crystal phases. The synthesised CCM exhibits oily streak textures under a polarised optical microscope (POM), corresponding to cholesteric liquid crystal phase formed after heating over 120 degrees C and after being treated with organic solvents such as dichloromethane, chloroform, tetrahydrofuran and toluene. Both the thermotropic and lyotropic cholesteric liquid crystals exhibit selective light reflection, and the wavelength of the reflected light falls in the visible light region showing colourful appearances. The results suggest that CCM could be used for the development of sensors for both temperature and solvents. Homopolymer (Poly-CCM) was synthesised via free radical polymerisation. The synthesised polymer did not exhibit any mesomorphic behaviour either by heating or being treated with solvents. These results indicate that the long chain hydrocarbons and sidechains of CCM were disturbed and restricted after polymerisation leading to the loss of liquid crystalline properties. However, cholesteric construction of monomeric CCM was fixed via UV-polymerisation. The synthesised Poly-CCM film shows Bragg reflection significantly.

Enhanced distribution kinetics in liquid-liquid extraction by CO2-expanded solvents

Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) is a useful extraction technique for highly complex samples, however, it suffers from being slow due to mass transfer limitations. Carbon dioxide expanded liquids (CXL) is a good replacement of traditional organic solvents for extraction, and for the first time, the use of CXL in LLE was evaluated. An equipment consisting of a high-pressure view cell with on-line gas chromatography analysis was built and validated, and thereafter used to obtain novel phase equilibria data of the CO2/n-octanol/water system. The system was connected on-line to HPLC to study the potential of CO2-expanded liquid-liquid extraction (CXLLE) of pharmaceutical contaminants in water. In comparison with traditional LLE performed under similar experimental conditions, the addition of CO2 as a viscosity-lowering entrainer significantly increased the speed of mass transfer. Changes in compound log D (octanol-water distribution ratio) values brought by the CO2 expansion also proved the possibility of selectivity-tuning in CXLLE. (C) 2020 The Author(s). Evaluation of the engineered polysaccharide alpha-1,3 glucan in a thermoplastic polyurethane model system

Enzymatic polymerization is under development as novel scalable process technology to convert sucrose to engineered polysaccharides. Similar to established monomer-based polymerization processes, this approach allows for the synthesis of glucose-based polymers with controlled polymer linkage, structure, and material morphology. Using enzymatic polymerization, alpha-1,3-polyglucose (glucan) can now be produced from sugar on scales required for industrial applications. This alpha-1,3 glucan material, with accessible primary and secondary hydroxyl groups within the overall defined particle morphology, is especially of interest as a partially reactive component in polyurethane chemistry. This study explores the impact of alpha-1,3-glucan as additive in a thermoplastic polyurethane model system and the improvement in mechanical properties of these composites. Glucan was effectively first mixed with a polyether polyol diol, forming a stable dispersion with narrow particle size distribution, followed by reaction with diisocyanate and chain extender to form the polyurethane matrix. The analysis of the generated polyurethane matrix indicates that the hydroxyl groups of the dispersed glucan particles directly react with isocyanate. Tetrahydrofuran solubility of the formed polyurethane compound decreased with the addition of glucan, providing evidence of covalent bonding of glucan leading to cross-linking of the polyurethane matrix. Thermal analysis of this model system suggests that the glucan additive induces hard segment crystallization, resulting in increased hardness and tensile modulus compared with the reference. Based on the observed property enhancements, engineered polysaccharides provide a sustainable performance additive for polyurethane materials.
