Optical and photocatalytic properties of biomimetic cauliflowered Ca2Mn3O8-CaO composite thin films

Inspired from the mu-oxido CaMn4 cluster unit present in the photosystem-II of plant cells, various manganesebased materials, particularly calcium-manganese oxides, have been investigated by the researchers as a new class of catalysts. Herein, we report the synthesis of single source heterobimetallic complex {[CaMn(OAc)(TFA)(3)(THF)(H2O)(2)](center dot)3THF}(n), (where OAc = acetate, TFA = trifluoroacetate and THE = tetrahydrofuran) for the deposition of thin films of Ca2Mn3O8-CaO composite on fluorine doped fin oxide (FTO) coated glass substrates at deposition temperatures of 450-550 degrees C via the aerosol assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD) method. The complex was characterized by melting point, microanalysis, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1 NMR), Fourier transformed infra-red (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TGA) and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The deposited thin films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) which confirmed the growth of Ca2Mn3O8-CaO composite with high purity and precise stoichiometry. The optical characterization gave direct band gap energies of 2.74, 2.68 and 2.77 eV for the Ca2Mn3O8-CaO thin films deposited at 450, 500 and 550 degrees C, respectively. Furthermore, photoelectrochemical studies revealed that the thin film deposited at 500 degrees C showed the photocurrent of 3.75 mA cm(-2) at +0.8 V vs. SCE with 1.64% photo-conversion efficiency and 310 Omega R-ct value, upon illumination with a 150 W (100 mW cm(-2)) halogen lamp. The improved photocatalytic activity of Ca2Mn3O8-CaO composite was due to the increased photo absorption ability, elevated surface area, and more efficient electron/hole transfer. In addition, this work provides an insight to design the growth of visible light active calcium-manganese based photocatalyst materials for solar energy utilization.

Bio-Guided Isolation of Acetogenins from Annona cherimola Deciduous Leaves: Production of Nanocarriers to Boost the Bioavailability Properties

Annonaceous acetogenins (ACGs) are lipophilic polyketides isolated exclusively from Annonaceae. They are considered to be amongst the most potent antitumor compounds. Nevertheless, their applications are limited by their poor solubility. The isolation of ACGs from Annona cherimola leaves, an agricultural waste, has not been reported to date. Molvizarin (1) cherimolin-1 (2), motrilin (3), annonacin (4) and annonisin (5) are isolated for the first time from A. cherimola deciduous leaves. Annonacin was found to be four- and two-times more potent in tumoral cells (HeLa, 23.6% live cells; IGROV-1, 40.8% live cells for 24 h) than in HEK-293 at 50 mu M (24 h, 87.2% live cells). Supramolecular polymer micelles (SMPMs) were synthesized to encapsulate the major ACG isolated, annonacin, in order to improve its solubility in aqueous media. The bioavailability of this compound was increased by a factor of 13 in a simulated human digestive system when compared with free annonacin and an encapsulation efficiency of 35% was achieved. In addition, the cytotoxic activity of SMPMs that hosted annonacin (100 mu M, 24 h, 5.8% live cells) was increased compared with free annonacin in water (100 mu M, 24 h, 92% live cells). These results highlight the use of by-products of A. cherimola, and their pure compounds, as a promising source of anticancer agents. The use of SMPMs as nanocarriers of ACGs could be an alternative for their application in food field as nutraceutical to enhance the administration and efficacy.

Comparison between Basic and Inverse Dual Drug and Peptide-coated Stents in a Porcine Restenosis Model

Dual drug-eluting stents (DES) is a primary treatment method for coronary arterial diseases in current interventional cardiology practice. However, their pathological results according to the sequence of coating of drugs have not been reported yet. The peptide-dopamine dissolved in acetonitrile was coated onto the Chonnam National University Hospital (CNUH) stent using an electrospinning coating machine. For secondary coating (e.g., sirolimus coating, designated as SPS), sirolimus (SRL) and poly lactic-glycolic acid (PLGA) were mixed in tetrahydrofuran (THF), and the solution was then coated on the CNUH stent that had underwent the primary peptide coating using an electrospinning and spray technique. Next, the peptide-dopamine was coated on the SRL-PLGA coated stent (PSS). In this study, it was confirmed that endothelialization was promoted without being significantly affected by the coating order (SPS or PSS). The sequence of drug and peptide coating may affect the development of restenosis and PSS was effective in the prevention of restenosis compared to that of using SPS.

Single-Step Integration of Poly(3-Octylthiophene) and Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes for Highly Reproducible Paper-Based Ion-Selective Electrodes

Calibration of ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) is cumbersome, time-consuming, and constitutes a significant limitation for the development of single-use and wearable disposable sensors. To address this problem, we have studied the effect of ion-selective membrane solvent on ISE reproducibility by comparing tetrahydrofuran (THF) (a typical solvent for membrane preparation) and cyclohexanone. In addition, a single-step integration of semiconducting/transducer polymer poly(3-octylthiophene) (POT) with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) into the paper-based ISEs (PBISEs) substrate was introduced. PBISEs for potassium and sodium ions were developed, and these ISEs present outstanding sensor performance and high potential reproducibility, as low as +/- 1.0 mV (n = 3).

Novel pyrazolyl-thiazoles: synthesis, characterization and study of their antidiabetic properties

A novel series of 1,3-diphenyl-pyrazole-4-carboxylic acid and its thiazole derivatives were conveniently synthesized followed by coupling reaction to investigate their efficiency as alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase inhibiting agents. Initially, pyrazole esters were obtained by using various benzaldehydes as precursor and subsequently converted to respective acids in tetrahydrofuran solvent medium. All the acid key intermediates obtained were coupled with previously synthesized thiazole amines to yield title compound with good yield. The current attempt cultivated many advantages such as good yield, time quenching and easy work up. Structures of newly obtained compounds were characterized by spectral studies such as NMR, Mass, IR and elemental analytical techniques. Finally, all the prepared compounds were tested for their antidiabetic activity. Among the synthesized compounds in comparison with standard drug, compound 4c, 4e and 4j showed promising in vitro antidiabetic activity. Bioassay result suggest that the compound 4e may emerge as a potent antidiabetic agent in future drug design.

Formation of intramolecular dimer radical ions of diphenyl sulfones

Dimer radical ions of aromatic molecules in which excess charge is localized in a pair of rings have been extensively investigated. While dimer radical cations of aromatics have been previously produced in the condensed phase, the number of molecules that form dimer anions is very limited. In this study, we report the formation of intramolecular dimer radical ions (cations and anions) of diphenyl sulfone derivatives (DPs) by electron beam pulse radiolysis in the liquid phase at room temperature. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations also showed the formation of the dimer radical ions. The torsion barrier of the phenyl ring of DPs was also calculated. It was found that the dimer radical ions show the larger barrier than the neutral state. Finally, stability of the dimer radical anion is dependent on not only the inductive effect of the sulfonyl group but the conjugation involving the d-orbital of the S atom and the phenyl rings.

Residues characteristics and structural evolution of Naomaohu coal during a mild direct liquefaction process

Direct coal liquefaction (DCL) is an important way of coal conversion and is important to the global energy industry. In this paper, a typical liquefied coal-Naomaohu coal (NMHC)-was liquefied under mild conditions (400 degrees C, initial H-2 pressure of 3 MPa), and a NMHC conversion of 90.6% was obtained with an oil+gas yield of 65.1%. In the DCL process, the solid particles of coal and its residues are not only reactants but also carriers of catalysts of DCL. To study the structural characteristics of these residues, the reaction mixture was extracted with n-hexane and tetrahydrofuran (THF), separately, yielding n-hexane insoluble residues (Re-HEIS) and THF insoluble residues (Re-THFIS). Several patterns of the reaction progresses were identified. First, the particle sizes of Re-HEIS and Re-THFIS have a decreasing trend, and the particle surface becomes loose and porous while raw coal has a relatively flat surface. Second, most of the aliphatic structure and some small aromatic compounds can gradually split off from coal skeleton structure, and the condensation degree of aromatic clusters in residues increases with the aromatic condensation degree of Re-THFIS being higher than that of Re-HEIS. Third, the contents of carbonyl carbon and oxygen-attached carbon decrease while methylene chain and side chain of aromatic clusters are broken. Lastly, the aromatic structure of Re-THFIS becomes regular, and the graphitization degree increases, while the pyrolysis rate slows down. These results of element analysis show that the H/C of Re-HEIS is larger than that of Re-THFIS, which implies that preasphaltene and asphaltene are relatively rich in hydrogen.

Thermal and dielectric investigation of magnetic nanoparticles functionalized with PVC via click chemistry

In the first phase, PVC was modified with sodium azide through a nucleophilic substitution reaction. Then, the propargyl methacrylate was synthesized from propargyl alcohol and methacryloyl chloride. The copolymerization of propargyl methacrylate and vinyltrimethoxysilane was carried out by free-radical polymerization method in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at 70 degrees C in with AIBN as the initiator. The magnetic nanoparticle was bonded to vinyltrimethoxysilane units of the copolymer. Finally, the copolymer with propargyl end group bearing the magnetic nanoparticle on its side chain was bonded to PVC-N(3)by click reaction. FTIR spectroscopy was used for the characterization. The thermal stability of PVC decreased after the azidation reaction and increased by grafting of magnetic nanoparticles to the copolymer. Vibration sample magnetometer (VSM) measurements revealed that the product reached saturation magnetization (M-s) at 33.7 emu/g, while the pure Fe(3)O(4)nanoparticle showedM(s)value of 53.2 emu/g. As the applied frequency increased, the dielectric constant (epsilon ‘) and dielectric loss factor (epsilon ”) of the copolymers diminished, while the AC conductivity (sigma(ac)) increased.
