Synthesis and Antifungal Activity of Novel Furan-2,4-dione Derivatives Containing Substituted Phenylhydrazine Moiety

A series of novel 3-(2-(substituted phenyl)hydrazinylmethylidene)furan-2,4(3H,5H)-diones were designed and synthesized with ethyl 4-chloroacetoacetate as the starting material. Their structures were confirmed by FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, EI-MS and elemental analysis. Bioassay data demonstrated that these compounds exhibited remarkable antifungal activity against Fusarium graminearum, Botrytis cinerea, Rhizoctonia cerealis and Colletotrichum capsici. Compound 3-(2-(4-bromophenyl)hydrazinylmethylidene)furan-2,4(3H,5H)-dione (5g) had excellent bioactivity against Botrytis cinerea with an EC50 value of 0.18 mug/mL – markedly lower than the 0.24 mug/mL of the commercial fungicide procymidone. The result revealed that introducing the halogenated phenylhydrazine at the 3-position of furan-2,4(3H, 5H)-dione was an effective way to design new tetronic acid derivatives as new fungicides. A series of novel furan-2,4-dione derivatives containing a substituted phenylhydrazine moiety were designed and synthesized. These compounds exhibited remarkable antifungal activity against Fusarium graminearum, Botrytis cinerea, Rhizoctonia cerealis and Colletotrichum capsici. Compound 5g showed significantly better bioactivity than the control fungicides.

Ionic liquids acted as alternatives of organic solvents and these ILs are environment friendly. Conclusion: In the area of green chemistry ionic liquid assisted synthesis is a very promising technique which afforded a flexible platform for the formation of heterocycles. The influence of ILs on the development of efficient and new synthetic protocols over the last decade for the construction of N-polyheterocycles is featured in this review article. These synthetic strategies will continue to attract more attention and will find a wide range of applications in organic synthesis. In conclusion, ionic liquids assisted syntheses have become an efficient and powerful tool in organic chemistry quickly.

Disclosed herein are methods for synthesizing 1,2,5,6-hexanetetrol (HTO), 1,6 hexanediol (HDO) and other reduced polyols from C5 and C6 sugar alcohols or R glycosides. The methods include contacting the sugar alcohol or R-glycoside with a copper catalyst, most desirably a Raney copper catalyst with hydrogen for a time, temperature and pressure sufficient to form reduced polyols having 2 to 3 fewer hydoxy groups than the starting material. When the starting compound is a C6 sugar alcohol such as sorbitol or R-glycoside of a C6 sugar such as methyl glucoside, the predominant product is HTO. The same catalyst can be used to further reduce the HTO to HDO.
