To a solution of TETRAHYDROFURAN-2-CARBOXYLIC acid (20 g, 172. 2356 MMOL) in anhydrous ethanol (100 mL) was added concentrated sulfuric acid (0. 46 mL). The resulting mixture was stirred at reflux for 16 hours and then allowed to cool to ambient temperature. To this was added water (100 mL) and extracted with diethyl ether (3×100 mL). The combined organic extracts were washed with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate (2X50 mL), saturated aqueous sodium chloride (100 ML), dried (anhydrous magnesium sulfate), filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford the pure product as a colorless liquid (22. 5964 g, 91 %).
